Dan Hopwood is the Director of Risk Management for the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, and is a Managing Consultant with Aspen Risk Management Group (Aspen RMG). He has over 27 years of experience as a risk management and insurance professional having worked for both national and regional carriers and brokers. He has created and managed two successful risk consulting firms in the past 15 years. He joined the Polestar team in 2006.
He is a recognized leader in program management, and has been an innovator, developing unique risk-related analytical tools and programs. In addition, Dan has taught at the college level on a variety of subjects, including safety, risk management, leadership, and management as well as supervisory skills and others. He has served as a mentor and coach to many in the industry.
He has over 15 publications to his name, including co-author of “Workplace Safety: A Guide for Small and Midsized Companies,” published by John Wiley and Sons. Dan has several published articles to his credit in both general and technical journals as well as trade publications, such as the San Diego Daily Transcript.
Dan is involved with a variety of industry and community-related associations, including the Risk and Insurance Management Society, the American Society of Safety Engineers and the Disaster Recovery Institute International. He is a frequent industry speaker, having made presentations on insurance, safety, and risk management topics to both national and international audiences.
He has been a consultant to small and large organizations, including those in the Fortune 1000. Dan has been a member of a variety industry groups, amongst them the American National Standards Institute, and has been instrumental in assisting numerous non-profit organizations increase their revenue through strategic planning and leadership.
Dan has earned the Associate in Risk Management (ARM) and the Certified Business Continuity professional designations. In addition, he earned the Master of Public health (M.P.H.) from San Diego State University 's Graduate School of Public Health in 1984. He lives in San Diego , CA with his wife Leslie and has two grown daughters, Kylie and Kendall.
