Walter J. Gdowski
President & CEO The Rough Notes Company

Walter J. Gdowski has been president and CEO of the Rough Notes Company since 1988. Prior to taking over leadership of the organization, he served as a regional sales representative, national sales manage, and vice president of sales and marketing for the company. He purchased The Rough Notes Company in 1994.

Early in his presidency, Walt concentrated resources on reformatting Rough Notes Magazine, which has served the independent property and casualty insurance agent and broker market since 1878. The result of that effort was to take a highly regarded publication and expand it to include feature articles and columns written by the best-known industry journalists and analysts, presented with professional on-site photography. In 1995, Rough Notes Magazine became the first industry publication to appear in its entirety on the Internet. This year, the magazine celebrates its 125th anniversary.

In 2000, Walt established The Rough Notes Company Community Service Award to honor those agents who volunteer their time, efforts, and financial resources to benefit others. The company donates up to six cash gifts to the charities the winning agents' efforts support.

Walt was honored by the Insurance Marketing Communication Association in 2001 for his 25 year commitment to supporting the independent agency systems when he was presented the organization's prestigious Golden Torch Award. He is a private pilot and has the unique distinction of getting his license at the age of 52 in a 1941 Stearman bi-plane, which he flies to air shows around the Midwest.
